This made me laugh in the middle of class:
Later, Kerry tried to switch places with Gingrich, branding him a big-government liberal. “You know, this is a huge transition,” he exclaimed. “You actually want the government to do it. I want the private sector to do it.”

Numbers from the Census on racial residential segregation. I’ll focus on two indices: dissimilarity and isolation. Dissimiliarity runs from 0 to 1, 1 being complete segregation. Isolation runs from 0 to 1, similarly. Details.
For African Americans, New York ranks as the 3rd most dissimilar and 1st most isolated. In contrast, San Francisco is 31st and 32nd respectively. Table.
The numbers fortunately support my contention that San Francisco is more racially integrated. Unfortunately …
For Asian Americans, New York ranks as the 1st most dissimilar and 4th most isolated. But San Francisco is 2nd and 2nd, respectively. And by a ranking of averaged ranks, San Francisco is the most racially segregated for Asian Americans, followed by New York as the third most. (I think the ranking of average ranks is bullshit, statistically.) Table.
I suspect these results are due to immigration, because immigrants tend to self segregate. But here are facts, and easily mis-interpretable facts at that, to chew on.

Table 5.5 shows the trade-offs between height and income. A man who is 5 feet 6 inches tall, for example, needs an additional $175,000 to be as desirable as a man who is approximately 6 feet tall (the median height in our sample) and who makes $62,500 per year.
Maybe the most striking numbers are with regard to income-ethnicity trade-offs, as shown in Table 5.6. For equal success with a white woman, an African-American man needs to earn $154,000 more than a white man. Hispanic men need an additional $77,000, and Asian men need an additional $247,000 in annual income. In contrast to men, women mostly cannot compensate for their ethnicity with a higher income.
From here.
And there are people who think that racism in America isn’t pervasive and endemic?
From reading the tables, I would require an income over half a million a year ($530,500) to be as attractive to a white woman (on average) as a six foot white man earning only $62,500 a year. This is before scaling for looks! i.e. physical attractiveness. I better get cracking on that. Only $510,500 to go!

One of the terrors of dating is Milan Kundera, and specifically, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, the sexually-transmitted book that this Czech-born author has inflicted on a generation of American youth.
Dating Without Kundera.
Reminds me of that line from High Fidelity.
I mean, I’ve read books like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Love in the Time of Cholera”, and I think I’ve understood them. They’re about girls, right?
(Oh, and don’t miss out on The Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel. This is the trick to a great burrito in New York.)

The Pittsburgh region has lost more residents since 2000 than any U.S. metropolitan area except New Orleans, but there’s no hurricane responsible for it dropping 60,309 people.
Yummy. Population decline.

Flirting is a basic instinct, part of human nature. This is not surprising: if we did not initiate contact and express interest in members of the opposite sex, we would not progress to reproduction, and the human species would become extinct.
Schools, colleges, universities and other educational establishments are hot-beds of flirting. This is largely because they are full of young single people making their first attempts at mate selection.
This is hilarious. If you’re obsessive compulsive in the slightest, please don’t read this. The detail will destroy you.
(Don’t ask why I was reading this. Let me tell you all about Ask Metafilter …)

He was clocked at 140 mph when he was 22. He threw a spitball made entirely from real unicorn spit. People don’t talk about this, but a pitch he threw killed Princess Diana. He had a super-curvy-special pitch that broke 3-to-9-to-1-to-3.65 before lodging itself in your colon and curing your colon cancer. Bob Feller was the first openly gay astronaut.
This is hilarious.

Am I a bad person for laughing at this photo?
I wonder if they would let me ride the ferris wheel.
