Apparently, I haven’t written in this thing since finals time Freshman year, second semester. What’s that all about? I guess I’ve been keeping my xanga current, and with the evolution of facebook, even that’s not entirely necessary.
So, my JHU life is over. Still doing somewhat JHU-things. Mostly research in a lab, travelling all the way to the Upper West Side to do so is the difference. In between all that, I’m looking for a good full time job (kids, this takes months to accomplish, I’ve been trying since March), and watching Mets (and Yankees) games on tv. I’ve got tickets to the Sunday game at Shea, so I’m definitely looking forward to that. Shea Stadium is my second home.
I guess I can’t believe people randomly come across this blog and still comment on it. It seems strange since this hadn’t been updated in about three years… well a little more than that.
But for all you current JHU students, I have some advice for you.
Your summers and free time (with the exception of weekends) shouldn’t exist for you anymore.
Making the job search easier for yourself later, means getting the experience now. Internships, summer jobs in offices, tutoring (volunteering or paid) will help build up your resume tremendously for post-graduation success. And of course, research always helps.
Not to mention, you need to get super-creative on your job search strategy. Looking on HotJobs.com and submitting a resume (even with a well-written cover letter) will not help you at all.
Search long and hard. Spread yourself out there. Network. Find ways to improve your resume and your skills. And get creative.
Another tip they never told you. The more RELEVANT experience you have is the better. Try finding things that can either transfer your talents to another field, or get your experience in the field you actually want to be in. It will make all the difference!
