Blogosphere comments
September 24th, 2006Dave Sifry from Technorati says that 27.2 million blogs exist on Technorati, with one new blog being created every second, or 1.2 million every day, or 50,000 every hour. He also says “There has never in human history been that many communications sources” in his blog “Have Coffee Will Write.” The article also mentions that spam-generated pings, or “spings”, can make up 60% of Technorati’s pings. The site allegedly has spam filters.
These numbers don’t appear to be correct. If 1.2 million blogs are created every day, that means there would be about 14 created every second, not 1 every second.
1,200,000 / 24 hours = 50,000.
50,000 / 60 minutes = 833 1/3.
833 1/3 minutes / 60 seconds = c. 13.89 posts per second.
Thus, the math does not add up to 1 blog per second, or 1.2 million every day.
Perhaps the numbers mean that 1 in every 14 blogs is actually published online. After all, it says 1.2 million “posts” and 1 blog “created” every second. That idea stands more in line with the statement that “there are about 27.2 million blogs and 75,000 new ones created each day.” If one blog is created each second, the result would be 86,400 blogs per day, a number relatively close to 75,000.
That said, I think this ‘phenomenon’ is overstated when we consider the many uses for blogging, such as publicity, news sharing, comments on current events, work and simple chatting.
